Gorge Orchestra Presents “BY REQUEST”
The Columbia Gorge Sinfonietta presents a thrilling program of classical favorites, “By Request.” The music was chosen by members of the orchestra and suggested by members of CGOA. The concert includes Tchaikovsky’s “1812” Overture, “Mars” from Holst’s “The Planets,” “Pavane” by Maurice Ravel, and “Festive Overture” by Dmitri Shostakovich.
The highlight of the program is the World Premiere of “Concerto #2 for Mountain Dulcimer and Orchestra” by Artistic Director Mark Steighner. The Concerto was commissioned by a patron of the orchestra and will be performed by guest artist Stephen Seifert. Seifert, a native of Nashville, is a virtuoso on the mountain dulcimer and concertizes extensively around the country. The 30-minute concerto is based on the theme of mountains and the challenge of climbing them. Seifert was a guest with the orchestra two years ago.
Conductor Mark Steighner notes that the music is almost all “big, powerful and exciting” and showcases the incredible local and guest talents within the orchestra. Steighner said that the “1812” Overture will include some audience participation sure to delight children as well as the young at heart.
The concerts will be in the Wy’east Middle School Performing Arts Center on Friday, May 18 at 7 PM and Sunday, May 20 at 2 PM. Tickets are $15 for adults (18+), $10 for students and children (age 10-17) and FREE for kids under 10. Tickets are available at the door or through gorgeorchestra.org
