CGOA Stages presents Tony-Award Winning musical FUN HOME
One of Broadway’s most innovative and celebrated new musicals is coming to the Wy’east PAC, as the Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association presents the Stages production of Fun Home. Winner of the Best Musical Tony in 2015, Fun Home is based on the graphic novel by Alison Bechdel, with music by Jeanine Tesori, and book and lyrics by Lisa Cron.
Fun Home is described as a “Tragi-Comedy” and is an autobiographical look at the relationship between author Bechdel and her father, who led a secret life and had a number of homosexual affairs while maintaining outward appearances as a small-town high school teacher and operator of the family business, a funeral home. Notably the first Broadway musical to also feature a lesbian main character -- based on Bechdel at three ages -- Fun Home explores many universal themes around memory, family, self-discovery, and coming to terms with one’s identity.
According to director Mark Steighner, the one-act musical balances the ultimately tragic life of Bruce (Alison’s father) with warmth, lightness, and humor. “This is a show about people learning to accept themselves at a time in American history -- the 1970s -- when there was still a public stigma around gender and sexual identity. However, Fun Home is not a “gay musical”. It is really about what we inherit from our families and whether we can ultimately learn to accept the people we love, flawed and confused as they are.”
The CGOA Stages production of Fun Home will be one of the first non-professional performances licensed in the country. The cast includes Rachel Moore-Beitler as adult Alison, Mila Fuentes as Middle Alison, and Abby Rankin and Fiona Larsen-Teskey sharing the role of Small Alison. Peter Tappert plays Bruce Bechdel, Emily Vawter plays Helen Bechdel, and the cast is rounded out by Miles Thoming-Gale, Lauren Gray, Quinn Harty, and Wes Parker.
The production runs February 8,9,10,16,17,23,24 at 7PM with a matinee on February 11th at 2PM. Tickets are $15 for adults (18+) and $10 for students and children (10-17). Due to mature language, Fun Home is not recommended for children under 12. Tickets are available at the door or through
