Date: April 2, 2017
Time: 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM PDT
Event Description:
Join CCA for a screening of the documentary film Never Give Up! Minoru Yasui and the Fight for Justice (Part One). Minoru (Min) Yasui, son of Japanese immigrant parents, was born in 1916 and raised in the farming community of Hood River. He was the first Japanese American attorney in Oregon, and during World War II, he initiated the first legal test challenging the forced removal from the West Coast and subsequent incarceration of over 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry in U.S. concentration camps. He spent nine months in solitary confinement awaiting his appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. This version of the film also contains a brief summary of Part Two—Yasui’s postwar life, including ongoing defense of the human and civil rights of all people; his leadership role in the Japanese American Redress movement, reopening of his legal case, and the posthumous award of a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. Yasui was the first and, to date, the only Oregonian to receive the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the country. In 2016, Yasui’s centennial (he was born in 1916), the Oregon state legislature unanimously passed a resolution designating March 28 as Minoru Yasui Day in perpetuity. That was the day in 1942 on which Min Yasui violated military orders in order to initiate his constitutional test case; and this year, 2017, is the 75th anniversary of that act. This film screening is generously sponsored and presented, in conjunction with CCA, by Hood River Library, Hood River County History Museum, and Gorge Owned.
